What percentage of Americans don t have $1,000 in their bank account?
Most would not turn to cash savings because they don't have it, the personal finance website found. Fewer than half of Americans, 44%, say they can afford to pay a $1,000 emergency expense from their savings, according to Bankrate's survey of more than 1,000 respondents conducted in December.
A stunning new Bankrate survey of 1,030 individuals finds that more than half of American adults (56%) lack sufficient savings to shoulder an unexpected $1,000 expense.
The result? Nearly seven in 10 Americans (69%) had less than $1,000 in their savings account. Breaking the survey data down a bit further, we find that 34% of Americans don't have a dime in their savings account, while another 35% have less than $1,000.
Nearly Half of Americans Don't Have $500 in Savings
According to the survey, 49% of Americans have $500 or less in their savings account, with 36% reporting they have less than $100 saved up. This means that a small financial upset can cause these households to end up in debt — or more debt.
A new GOBankingRates survey of more than 1,000 adults found that 28% of people have nothing saved for the future, 39% aren't contributing to a retirement fund and another 30% don't think they'll ever be able to retire. While these numbers worry the experts, they don't shock them.
44% of Americans can't pay an unexpected $1,000 expense from savings. 'We're just not wired to save,' expert says. Many Americans cannot cover a $1,000 emergency expense with cash, a new survey finds. It may not be our fault.
The numbers speak for themselves. A new GOBankingRates survey found that most Americans have $1,000 or less in personal savings in 2023; a third have $500 or less saved, while 8.5% have between $501 and $1,000. Meanwhile a whopping 11.4% said they have no savings, the survey found.
The Federal Reserve also measures median and mean (average) savings across other types of financial assets. According to the data, the average 70-year-old has approximately: $60,000 in transaction accounts (including checking and savings) $127,000 in certificate of deposit (CD) accounts.
Key Takeaways. More than one in four Americans (28%) have savings below $1,000. This is the case for 32% of Gen Zers, followed by Millennials at 31%, Gen X at 27% and Baby Boomers at 20%.
Having enough set aside for an unexpected car repair is a good place to start your emergency fund, but just 45% of Americans would be able to cover a $1,000 emergency expense without turning to a credit card or loan, according to the survey.
What percentage of Americans have $1,000 in the bank?
The numbers are consistently around 60%, meaning only 40% of Americans have enough savings to cover an unexpected expense without going into debt. As of January 2023, the report shows that 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.
Just 45% of all Americans have $1,000 or more in savings.

You can still live a fulfilling life as a retiree with little to no savings. It just may look different than you originally planned. With a little pre-planning, relying on Social Security income and making lifestyle modifications—you may be able to meet your retirement needs.
The short answer is yes, $500,000 is enough for many retirees. The question is how that will work out for you. With an income source like Social Security, modes spending, and a bit of good luck, this is feasible. And when two people in your household get Social Security or pension income, it's even easier.
Get a Part-Time Job or Side Hustle. If you're contemplating retirement with no savings, then you may need to find ways to make more money. Getting a part-time job or starting a side hustle are two ways to earn money in your spare time without being locked into a full-time position.
Income percentage | Account balance |
---|---|
60-79.9% | $7,924 |
80-89.9% | $13,434 |
90-100% | $43,631 |
National average | $8,814 |
In terms of savings accounts specifically, you'll likely find different estimates from different sources. The average American has $65,100 in savings — excluding retirement assets — according to Northwestern Mutual's 2023 Planning & Progress Study. That's a 5% increase over the $62,000 reported in 2022.
Key Findings. 48.6% of Americans consider themselves to be “broke,” and 66.2% feel they are “living paycheck to paycheck.” There is a gender gap in the results: Females are more likely to consider themselves “broke” at 55.8%, compared to males at 41.1%.
While the median bank account balance is $8,000, according to the latest SCF data, the average — or mean — balance is actually much higher, at $62,410.
What percentage of Americans have $10000 in their bank account?
18% said their saving were at least $1000 but under $10,000, while 11% each had $10,000 to $49,999 and $50,000 or more saved up. A substantial share of respondents—17%—preferred not to answer. The survey also found that U.S. women were much less likely to have (substantial) savings.
According to data from the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, the average American family has $62,410 in savings, across savings accounts, checking accounts, money market accounts, call deposit accounts, and prepaid cards.
Our 2023 Planning & Progress study found that the average amount of retirement savings for 70-year-olds in the U.S. is $113,900. When we asked this group how much they need to retire comfortably, their answer was much higher at $936,000.
Age Range | Median Net Worth | Average Net Worth |
---|---|---|
55-64 | $212,500 | $1,175,900 |
65-74 | $266,400 | $1,217,700 |
75+ | $254,800 | $977,600 |
The average retirement savings for all families is $333,940 according to the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances. Taken on their own, those numbers aren't incredibly helpful. There are a variety of decent retirement savings benchmarks out there, but how much money other people have isn't one of them.
