What is a soft credit check for a car rental?
Soft credit checks are done by various companies and individuals. These inquiries into your credit history normally don't affect your score and are only used to see if there is any credit history. Hard credit checks can negatively impact a credit score and are more in-depth than soft checks.
With car rentals, they will perform a hard check on your credit. If you want to read more about the difference between soft and hard checks, check out our blog post: How are Soft Credit Checks Different From Hard Checks?
A soft credit check may be visible on your credit report, but won't affect your credit score, or your ability to get credit in future, so there's no need to worry about how often they're completed.
A soft credit pull can show information such as credit accounts, late payments, collection activity and hard credit inquiries. Only you can see what soft credit inquiries have been run on your credit report.
Generally, a corporate rental agency will have no trouble renting an economy car to someone with a credit score ranging from 550-600. The higher the credit score, the more likely it is that you will be granted access to a wider range of vehicles at more competitive prices.
Landlords can check credit in a few different ways; some are considered hard pulls while others are considered soft pulls. You are well within your right to ask the landlord what type of credit check they're going to do.
Yes, renting a car can affect your credit score.
What's more - the effect will likely be negative if you use a debit card.
There are two types of credit score inquiries lenders and others (like yourself or your landlord) can make on your credit score: a "hard inquiry" and a "soft inquiry." The difference between the two is that a soft inquiry won't affect your score, but a hard inquiry can shave off some points.
Soft inquiries do not affect credit scores and are not visible to potential lenders that may review your credit reports. They are visible to you and will stay on your credit reports for 12 to 24 months, depending on the type.
A soft inquiry does not affect your credit score in any way. When a lender performs a soft inquiry on your credit file, the inquiry might appear on your credit report but it won't impact your credit score.
What are some examples of a soft credit check?
Soft inquiries (also known as “soft pulls” or “soft credit checks”) typically occur when a person or company checks your credit as part of a background check. This may occur, for example, when a credit card issuer checks your credit without your permission to see if you qualify for certain credit card offers.
Soft inquiries can stay on a credit report for up to two years, but they're not visible to anyone other than you. During that time they don't have any impact on your credit scores.
Soft inquiries have no effect on your credit score. Lenders can't even see how many soft inquiries have been made on your credit report.
The idea may be that someone who doesn't have a credit card could have trouble paying for incidental charges, such as a late return, or for damages after an accident. Running a credit check could help the agency ensure the renter has a history of paying bills on time and isn't currently behind on any accounts.
Hertz. Hertz will run a credit check when a debit card is the form of payment used for the rental. There are also stricter account hold requirements. In addition to the estimated charges, Hertz places an additional $500 hold on the account, meaning you cannot use those funds during the rental.
While there isn't a minimum credit standard across all traditional car rental companies, a low credit score can be a deal-breaker for many. Your credit report can decide whether you get a rental car even if you use a debit card instead.
Most landlords partner with one of the three major U.S. credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax. These background checks will actually reveal much more about a prospective tenant than just their credit score; the goal is to discover any suspicious financial activity in the applicant's background.
Look into an eviction expungement in your county. By proving that you've since paid the debt or that the eviction was unfairly brought against you, you stand a good chance of having the request granted. The reporting company will then be required to remove the information via the FCRA.
At most airport locations proof of a return flight that coincides with the rental must be shown. Debit cards are also not accepted when renting specialty vehicles. In most cases U.S. locations will perform a credit check for debit card renters to determine credit worthiness at the time of rental.
Landlords can check credit in several different ways; some are considered hard pulls while others are considered soft pulls. You can always ask the landlord what type of credit check they're going to do.
How can poor credit affect renting?
If you have bad credit, this could result in a rejection for the apartment or a more expensive security deposit. However, that's not always the case. Some landlords don't check credit at all, while others are willing to overlook iffy credit if you can prove your responsibility and trustworthiness in other ways.
Similar to a hotel, the hold is put on when you rent the car and give the rental company a credit card to use. When you return the car, the actual charges are settled and the correct final amount is posted while the held amount is reversed or never posted. Hotels do the same thing.
You recently applied for credit
If you applied for a credit card or are shopping around for a loan, a hard inquiry can appear on your credit report, which temporarily lower a score. Hard inquiries happen when a lender or company reviews your report with the intent to make a lending decision.
If you are more than 30 days past due on a payment, credit issuers will report the delinquency to at least one of the three major credit bureaus, likely resulting in a drop in your score. Payments that become 60 or 90 days past due will have an even greater effect on your score.
Soft inquiries don't impact your credit score. On the other hand, hard inquiries can decrease your score by a few points—or more if there are many different types of inquiries in a short period of time. A hard inquiry will impact your score for less than a year.
