Bold truth: Tyra Banks says she really did go too far on America’s Next Top Model, and she’s unpacking those moments in a new Netflix series.
Tyra Banks, now 52, reflects on the show that helped launch countless modeling careers and defined a generation of reality TV drama. In Netflix’s Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, released on February 16, 2026, interviewers, producers, judges, and former contestants revisit the program eight years after its finale. The centerpiece is a clip of Banks shouting at Tiffany Richardson from season four, a moment that has since gone viral on platforms like TikTok.
Nigel Barker recalls the tension of that moment: “Tyra really scared all of us. We literally jumped out of our seats.” Banks admits the outburst went too far. “I went too far. I lost it. It was probably bigger than her,” she says, adding that the incident tapped into broader pressures she saw around race, standards, and belonging. “It was family, friends, society, black girls, all the challenges we have. So many people saying we’re not good enough. I think all of that was in that moment. That’s some black girl stuff that goes real deep inside of me, but I knew I went too far.”
The documentary revisits other controversial choices from the show, including pressure on contestants to undergo dental work and to participate in a photoshoot that involved dressing as different races. In one scene, Banks questions Dani Evans about fixing a gap in her teeth, suggesting the decision could affect her status on the competition. Banks explains she later apologized, acknowledging that industry agents sometimes push for outcomes that aren’t ideal, and that hindsight is clearer when lived publicly. “I’ve actually apologised for the issue with Dani and what happened,” she notes, emphasizing that difficult realities unfold when leadership sits in the spotlight.
Another contentious moment: white contestants wearing blackface for a race-themed shoot. Banks reflects on her own perspective at the time—dependent on being in a bubble—and admits the project lacked the sensitivity a more informed era would demand. “This was my little way of showing the world that brown and black is beautiful. But we put it out there and the world said, ‘are you crazy, have you lost your mind?’”
Banks also recalls telling her close collaborators—Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel, and J. Alexander—that they would be leaving the show in a 2013 network switch-up. She describes delivering that news as “the hardest thing” she ever had to do, saying she cried herself to sleep that night.
The interview acknowledges the show’s flaws and the mixed legacy it left behind. Banks expresses gratitude for the criticism, framing it as a catalyst for growth: “That is the only way you change, that is the only way you get better—by somebody calling you out on your sh*t. It is important.”
