The monumental success of 'KPop Demon Hunters' has creators feeling the immense weight of expectation for its sequel! This animated marvel is already making waves, with whispers of two Oscar wins for Best Animated Feature and Best Song. Even if the Academy doesn't bestow those golden statues, its achievements are undeniable. It has shattered records, becoming Netflix's most-watched film ever, and its soundtrack is a chart-topping sensation, currently enjoying a renewed surge in popularity thanks to the Olympics. With the highly anticipated merchandise finally rolling out, the burning question on everyone's mind is: what's next for this beloved franchise?
In a recent interview, the visionary directing duo behind 'KPop Demon Hunters,' Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, shared a knowing chuckle when the topic of their follow-up film arose. While a direct question about the sequel's plot might have been playfully deflected, the message is clear: this isn't a project to be rushed. Reports suggest 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' is eyeing a 2029 release, giving the team ample time to craft something truly special. However, even with this extended runway, Kang and Appelhans revealed they're experiencing significant pressure, much of it self-imposed.
'We've been joking that we feel like we're still working on the first movie,' Appelhans admitted, a sentiment born from its ongoing success and the current awards season buzz. Now that the whirlwind of promoting the first film is winding down, they, like the fictional 'Huntr/x' members in their movie, are ready for some much-needed 'couch time.'
But the sequel is definitely on their minds. 'To create a compelling sequel, you have to delve much deeper than what was presented in the first film,' Kang explained. 'It requires developing extensive backstories and fully fleshing out the entire world, so that the story you tell is just one facet of that rich universe.'
Kang continued, highlighting the personal stakes involved. 'For the first movie, we placed an incredible amount of pressure on ourselves. Personally, seeing someone who looks like me achieve this position is still rare. I was determined not to squander this opportunity, thinking, 'This might be the only chance I get in my career.' So, I poured everything into making a film I could be immensely proud of, and my standards are exceptionally high. Chris shares those same high standards. This dedication to quality will undoubtedly carry over to our future projects. Honestly, I don't think anyone else can put the kind of pressure on us that we put on ourselves.'
And this is the part that might raise some eyebrows: While the extended development time for 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' suggests a deliberate and careful approach, unlike the reported time constraints faced by the final season of 'Stranger Things,' the expectations for this sequel are astronomically high. Could this immense pressure stifle creativity, or will it fuel an even more extraordinary cinematic experience? Fortunately, Kang and Appelhans have a generous amount of time before the film is expected to hit screens.
